eSmile’s leading dentist

HLL, HANNU VESANEN

“Smile is the prettiest thing you can wear”

It was by no means self-evident that I would end up getting an education in esthetics and developing an attachment to this field. I graduated as a dentist in 1998, and soon after, I found myself immersed in making porcelain fillings that stand the test of time and honor a good occlusion. As I had a constant need to learn more about topics on which no training was available in Finland, I ended up looking for training and activities organized by international organizations. I was a long-term member of the Scandinavian Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (SAED), and they provided me with a lot of additional knowledge and recommendations for further pursuing my interest. Soon after this, I found myself involved in the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), an umbrella organization for cosmetic dentistry in the United States. I wanted to challenge myself by stepping out of my comfort zone. After nearly five years of studying and clinical work, I graduated and was the first Finnish dentist to graduate with the AACD accreditation. At that time, this made me Europe’s seventh AACD-accredited dentist in the 25-year history of the AACD organization.

However, I detected some shortcomings in the United States and wished to correct these in my own work. I might call myself a pioneer in the ”Minimal invasive – Maximal results” ideology. These days, I spend a lot of time giving lectures in Europe strongly based on this slogan. The basic idea is to create beautiful and long-lasting results without unnecessary drilling. At this time, orthodontics became an essential part of the treatment. The idea was to ensure that the teeth alignment is as optimal as possible before applying porcelain veneers or esthetic composite resins. After all, you would not install tiles on crooked bathroom walls before first doing the groundwork either. Orthodontics also enables balancing the client’s bite, which promotes the longevity of porcelain veneers and composite resins. A balanced and well-functioning bite is also a visible part of a person’s wellbeing.

At the start of 2010, pre-orthodontics gained a strong role in my work. At that time, the Invisalign treatment had been performed around one million times. Today, eSmile is a Diamond-level Invisalign treatment provider. Personally, I have experience of performing the Invisalign orthodontic treatment for over 1,000 times. For years, I have served as an international Invisalign educator and lecturer on the topic Minimal Invasive – Maximal Results in Esthetic Dentistry. Thanks to my years of experience, I have achieved the Key Opinion Leader (KOL) status in a working group of Invisalign specialists. These days, I work very closely with Align Technology, the company behind the Invisalign aligners, and am also involved in promoting the development of the Invisalign aligners in various expert groups.

In 2021, eSmile achieved the highest Invisalign status, Diamond Apex Provider. As less than 1% of all Invisalign providers in the world have achieved this status, this is a huge accomplishment, also at the international level. My core competence and closest to my heart is the Invisalign orthodontic treatment and the porcelain veneers applied at the end of the treatment. The latter involves applying veneers that are thinner than contact lenses and represent top esthetics on nearly untouched surfaces of teeth. Thanks to my numerous international contacts, I have had an opportunity and honor to work with the best in the industry both in the world of Invisalign as well as the technicians manufacturing porcelain veneers. This enables us to provide each client with the style that best suits them, whether this be the style favored in the United States, Brazil or the Nordic countries.

When the customer’s bite and teeth are in order, it is easy to apply veneers on them, and this also enables saving tissue. The main thing is that if a need to renew the porcelain veneers arises at some point, the enamel under the veneers is healthy and intact, which makes it easy to apply new veneers that will stand the test of time. As a dentist, I find that honoring the customer’s own tissue is the only appropriate solution. TikTok videos spread around the world will show you that this is not something to be taken for granted!
